Glasgow Peggy

[trad. arr. An Lár]

Hieland lads are brave and braw
Hielan' lads are rough and ready
One's awa' tae Glasgow toone
Tae steal awa' th lovely Peggy

Her faither he got word o' this
And o' but he was wondrous angry
"You may steal my oxen and kye
But leave tae me my lovely Peggy"

"Gude weel auld man your oxen and kye
For i hae cows and yowes already
I winna steal your oxen and kye
I'll wile awa' your lovely Peggy"

He's set her on a milk-white steed
And himsel' on a little grey naigie
They rode over hill and dale
And over moors and mosses many

They rode on and further on
There was nothing there fit for a lady
Her bed was o' the green green grass
Her blankets o' the bracken bonnie

They lay there till the break o' day
Then up them rose and mak' them ready
He said "Will you go along wi' me
Or will you go back tae your Daddie?"

"I'll follow you through frosts and snow
I'll follow you through dangers many
I will go along wi' you
And won't return back tae my Daddie"

He's ta'en her up yon high high hill
Where the moon and stars were shining clearly
"All that's yours as far as you see
For riding awa' wi' a Hieland laddie"

And all that she was promised at first
Was a wee cot-hoose and a wee kail-yairdie
Noo' she is the Lady of Skye
For riding awa' wi' a Hieland laddie
